About
Michael Johnson, Jr. is an educator and systems-level leader in his 20th year at Fordham High School for the Arts, where he currently serves as Principal. He began his career as a Teach For America corps member and later served nearly a decade as an assistant principal before assuming the principalship at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership is grounded in educational equity and the belief that when students struggle, systems, not students, often need to change. Under his leadership, Fordham High School for the Arts was named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School and has earned repeated recognition as a College Board AP School Honor Roll Platinum institution.
Johnson’s work focuses on dismantling academic tracking and what Zaretta Hammond describes as cognitive redlining by redesigning programming structures, expanding Advanced Placement and dual-enrollment opportunities, and strengthening learning partnerships between educators and students. He currently leads a multi-year instructional strategy centered on a Portrait of a Graduate and Deeper Learning, moving from the design of performance assessments to their implementation as demonstrations of student learning, including a 4-year capstone experience. This work prioritizes inclusive rigor, student voice, instructional coherence, and equitable access to opportunity while preparing students for meaningful success in college, career, community, and life.
Beyond his school, Johnson serves as a Model Principal for FutureReadyNYC, supporting leaders with instructional improvement and systems alignment. He is also a 2025 Cambiar Catalyst Fellow and a 2026 New, Now, Next (N3) Fellow, experiences that have strengthened his focus on systems transformation and performance-based assessment. Johnson earned a B.S. in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience from Duke University and an M.Ed. in School Building Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University. His work centers on translating successful school-level practices into sustainable systems that expand opportunity and improve outcomes across schools and communities.
